What We’re Teaching (That Isn’t Art)

At Cygnets, our fine art classes help children develop real artistic skills, but art is also a powerful vehicle for learning far more than how to draw or paint. Professional artists teach our classes in a fun, safe and nurturing environment, and we see first-hand the impact weekly art classes can have on children’s wider development.

Alongside creativity, children are building confidence, strengthening fine motor skills, and learning how to problem-solve, often without even realising it. Here’s how and why these skills are so intrinsically linked to art:

Fine Motor Skills

From holding a pencil or paintbrush to cutting, sculpting and manipulating materials, art naturally strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers. These fine motor skills are essential for everyday tasks such as writing, fastening buttons, and using tools with control and precision.

Children are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques in our classes. This variety helps them develop hand strength, coordination, and control in a way that feels playful rather than repetitive. Children are actively engaged and enjoying the process whilst creating art, and therefore they often practise these skills for longer and with greater focus than they might in more structured settings.

Problem Solving

Art is full of decisions. What happens if I mix these colours together? How can I make this sculpture stand up? What do I do if it doesn’t look how I imagined?

Rather than providing instant answers, our teachers guide children to think things through, try alternatives, and adapt when something doesn’t go to plan. This teaches them that mistakes aren’t failures, but part of the learning process.

Through art, children learn to assess, adjust and persevere – all key problem-solving skills that transfer far beyond art classes and into school, friendships and everyday life.

Confidence Building

One of the most powerful things we see in our classes is the quiet growth of confidence. Art gives children ownership over their ideas and the freedom to express themselves without fear of being “right” or “wrong”.

By celebrating effort, curiosity and individuality rather than comparison or ‘the finished product’, children begin to trust their own judgement and enjoy the process. To then complete a piece of work, especially one they are proud of, builds a genuine sense of achievement.

Over time, this confidence shows itself in small but meaningful ways – children become willing to try something new, to openly share their ideas, and to believe in their own abilities.

At Cygnets, art is never just about the finished product. It’s about the skills developed along the way, skills that support children as learners, thinkers and confident individuals. If you’re not already part of our community, you can find your nearest Cygnets class here.
